Our stupid President

I was a fence-rider when it came to the decision as to whether or not we should invade Iraq. Being a former infantryman in the USMC my standard for when our troops should be sent to fight is very high and the evidence for WMD’s seemed a little weak to me. Having said that, I put faith in the President that he knew more about what was going on over there than I did. Of course it turns out that everyone was wrong. He wasn’t lying to us just to avenge his father, or to ‘get the oil’ or some such crap, he was just misled, as was the rest of the world, as to what Iraq was capable of, so get over it.

So now we’ve been fighting this war for over three years and I’ve put faith in the President that he has learned from past mistakes and is letting the war be fought the way it should be. In other words, the commanders are making the tactical decisions, the RoE’s are sound, the enemy is pursued no matter where his refuge, and politics are playing little, if any, part in the fighting: otherwise known as ‘The Mistakes of Vietnam.’

Then we have last night’s speech and we come across this gem:

In earlier operations, political and sectarian interference prevented Iraqi and American forces from going into neighborhoods that are home to those fueling the sectarian violence. This time, Iraqi and American forces will have a green light to enter these neighborhoods – and Prime Minister Maliki has pledged that political or sectarian interference will not be tolerated.

And this:

Our past efforts to secure Baghdad failed for two principal reasons: There were not enough Iraqi and American troops to secure neighborhoods that had been cleared of terrorists and insurgents. And there were too many restrictions on the troops we did have.

Un-f’ing-believable. Vietnam redux, and I am loathe to say that.

So what the hell am I, an ardent believer in the GWOT, supposed to do now? Where am I to put my faith? We can’t just up and pull out of Iraq but am I supposed to continue to believe that this stupid President can win it?

Color me pissed. Irate. Seething.
